Happy employees are the heart of a successful business. But how do you keep more than five hundred people happy? You can't. However, you can make sure to connect with all these employees on a deeper level. Which will help build a relationship with them. 

That's one of the issues OQGN wanted to solve by creating engaging content in a fun way.

OQGN is Oman’s exclusive owner and operator of the natural gas transmission network. It's a pretty tough business to run, especially when the whole country depends on you. That's why they need to keep their employees happy! 

We had a chat with Tahani, OQGN's brand and corporate communication specialist. We talked about how she decided to redefine the company's internal communications by stepping away from boring PDFs (her words) and embracing fun digital content.

Tahani explained that she had 3 issues with their old way of working: 

  1. The content was boring and lengthy 
  2. Employees didn't have a way to communicate feedback
  3. The traditional formats did not provide an interactive experience

Communication in a highly technical industry

The Sultanate of Oman lies at the heart of the Arabian Sea in the Middle East. Gas transportation is technical in this region of the world. One of OQGN's strengths is to create communications that tell stories and make this process graspable for anyone.

They needed a way to reflect this strength in both their internal and brand content. The static nature of PDFs was a big limiting factor.

"I found the traditional PDF newsletters long and boring, which led me to seek a more engaging solution."

In addition to being static and time-consuming to create, Tahani also explained that she found PDFs to be incredibly boring and long to read, which probably resulted in no one actually reading them. The team had no way of knowing who actually read these newsletters because once a PDF was out the door, it was impossible to track readers’ engagement with it.

"If I am getting bored from reading these articles, what about employees? For sure, they will feel the same."

In an already complex industry, creating engaging content was a necessity to keep employees and customers happy.

"The biggest challenge in our industry is creating eye-catching content while also conveying complex technical terms."

 

Reinventing Content in a fun way

Not long after starting to work for OQGN, Tahani looked for a new way to create content. She quickly found Foleon.

One of the main issues she wanted to fix was the static nature of the content she was creating in PDFs. No videos, gifs, podcasts... nothing could be added except for texts and images. With Foleon, they now embed a myriad of engaging elements.

Re-engaging with employees

After stepping away from PDFs, the team quickly noticed a clear improvement in their interactions with employees.

By embedding forms directly into their monthly newsletter, they give employees a direct line to the company's ear. Making them feel seen and heard. They also acknowledge them by highlighting some of them in each newsletter.

They started implementing it in their event strategy, quickly gathering direct feedback and data from their event.

"We created a form to track how many people visited us at the event, as well as to gather their comments on the event."

OQGN also uses Foleon to create interactive brand guidelines that are accessible to the whole organization.

Everyone wants to read fun and engaging content, even people who work in technical fields. OQGN understood that and took a step towards reinventing their internal communication.
