Best practices to improve Foleon Doc load times

Foleon enables you to create compelling content that your audience craves. In this article, we share some Foleon Doc guidelines that help you create the most effective content.

💡 Why make content an experience? Read our interactive eBook to learn more.

Why do we have these guidelines?

At Foleon, we want to empower our customers to create content that's interactive, engaging, and highly effective. In order to achieve that, we believe that content should be an experience. An experience that:

  • ...is easy to navigate and read.

  • ...is relevant to the reader.

  • ...has no information overload.

To offer optimal performance, we have recommended content limits and best practices. Within these limits, Foleon can guarantee performance and make sure all systems are running smoothly when creating the Foleon Doc, and/or generating a Preview or Published version.

Best practices for improving load times

If you're noticing slower load times when viewing your Foleon Docs, here are some tips to optimize performance without compromising quality or impact.

1. Stick to the "Rule of 20"

When generating a Foleon Doc Preview or publishing your content, Foleon renders your content with a dedicated engine. To ensure performance and improve load times, we have content limits that users are strongly recommended to adhere to:

  • Max. 20 blocks per page or per overlay

  • Max. 20 overlays per Foleon Doc

  • Max. 20 pages total

💡 Foleon does not enforce these content size limitations within the product, meaning that adding content beyond the supported limits is technically possible.

2. Limit the number of videos per page

Video content is engaging, but it's also one of the heaviest elements on a page. We recommend that you include no more than three videos per page. If you want to include more videos, try distributing them across multiple pages to balance the load.

3. Use streaming services for video hosting

If your account includes access to Foleon-hosted videos, we recommend using platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia for larger files. These services deliver videos more efficiently, especially across varying internet speeds. See all supported video integrations here.

4. Optimize image size before uploading

Large images can drastically slow down loading. Before uploading, we recommend aiming for 1920x1080 resolution and compressing the file as much as possible without losing quality. You can find more best practices for your images here.

5. Choose the right image file type

Different image types are suited for different content and design needs:

    Image type Best for Why
    JPG Photos Smaller file size
    PNG Transparent graphics Supports transparency
SVG Icons, logos, shapes Scales with your page, lightweight

    6. Use Lottie instead of GIFs

Lottie files are lighter and scale seamlessly across all screen sizes, making them ideal for animations. Learn how to add a Lottie animation to your page here.

    7. Test your Docs

Regularly test your Doc in incognito mode or low-bandwidth environments to check its performance. This helps you identify performance issues that might not appear on a fast, cached connection.
