What happens when you rename a Project Alias

If you host your Docs on Foleon's default domain, renaming a project alias changes the URL for every Doc in that project, and any link using the old alias stops working right away. This article covers why that happens, how to restore the old URL, and what to do if you want to keep the new one.

Understand why this happens

If you're using a Foleon default domain and you rename your project alias, the URL for every Doc in that project changes. The old URL stops working right away, so anyone visiting it lands on a 404 page.

This happens because your Doc's URL includes the project alias:
account-alias.foleon.com/project-alias/doc-alias

For example:
Let's say your original project alias is: sales-proposal
→ The URL of your Docs will look like this: acme.foleon.com/sales-proposal/doc-alias

If you then update your project alias to: proposals
→ The URLs of all your Docs will update to: acme.foleon.com/sales-proposal/doc-alias

⚠️ Before changing your project alias, be aware: the URLs of every Doc in your project will stop working and show a 404 page.

This only applies if you're using a Foleon default domain. If your project uses a custom domain instead, your URL is built from your domain and base path.

Restore the old URL

If you didn't mean to change the alias, or you want to undo the change, reverting it brings your original URLs back right away:

  1. Open the Projects page in your workspace.
  2. Click the quick actions menu (⋮) on the project.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll to Domain setup.
  5. Enter the original project alias in the Project alias field.
  6. Click Save.

💡 Your original URLs work again as soon as you save, no republishing needed.

Keep your new alias

If you'd rather keep the new alias, you'll need to set up a redirect. In some cases, we may be able to help you set up this redirect. Contact our support team here and share the old URL and the new URL.
